I confess to being a little confused about what constitutes an SUV now. It use to be all-wheel-drive but that’s not the case anymore especially with the expanding market of the small SUVs.
The Suzuki S-Cross clearly says in its name that it is not just a sedan but crosses over into the SUV class. But their SX4 is considered a small car but it has style that is a bit upright.
The S-Cross that we are testing today looks a bit like a station wagon in the Subaru XV style.
But nonetheless it is officially placed in the baby SUV class.
To tell us how it goes I have on the line Brent Davison from the Newcastle Herald and the Illawarra Mercury.
- The baby SUV market is growing. The low price models are up 16% while the more expensive marques are up 11%
- There are 19 in the class and five of those are new this year so the companies are clearly targeting this market. The new ones are Ford Ecosport, Nissan Juke, The Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 2008 and the Suzuki S-Cross.
- Good room inside
- Interior has good style with no fuss operation
- Handles well
- Only went with a 1.6 litre engine
- CVT noisy – 7 step – paddle shift
