Isuzu is the biggest selling brand for trucks in Australia although they may not always be the biggest models. They also sell two passenger vehicle models, a ute and most recently they released a large SUV called the MU-X.
It shares a lot of components with Holden’s Colorado but is made in a separate factory in Thailand.
So far this year large SUVs are the biggest segment of the Australian SUV market, not far ahead of medium SUVs.
It is a competitive market with 22 models in the less than $70,000 price range and 13 models in the greater than $70,000 range.
Overdrive has already talked to motoring journalist Chris Gable about his initial reactions of the MU-X after he attended the launch in Thailand but now we have had the chance to drive the vehicle in Australian conditions.
To help us in this, we have on the line Brent Davison from the Newcastle Herald and the Illawarra Mercury.
Brent’s judgement of this vehicle’s market niche isn’t matched by any other review published on the web at the moment. The MU-X’s peers would be vehicles like Mitsubishi’s Challenger and Pajero. It’s selling well in the suburbs for its seven seats, easy power, light steering and good fuel economy.
