It was back in 1997 that Volkswagen released the new beetle.

It was meant to be a nostalgic throw back to the success of the original Beetle.

But it was expensive and had more cuteness than character (right down to a plastic flower on the dash).  It was the sort of car Lady Penelope from the Thunderbirds would drive.  Some were produced in pink and your thought that was about right.

It turned heads but it did not last.  They stopped making it in 2011.  Probably not a bad run but the numbers dwindled at the end.

Now they have brought out a new model.

It still has the same basic shape but there is something much stronger about its looks particularly at the rear where the slopping back roof line is more distinct and the bulges over the rear wheels are more pronounced.

To discuss it we have Brent Davison from the Newcastle Herald and the Illawarra Mercury.
